E-Bike Battery Safety and Charging Guide

This guide provides best practices for e-bike battery safety and charging, working in conjunction with your e-bike's owner's manual.  Your safety and the safety of those around you are our top priority.

Important Safety Warnings:

  • Aftermarket Products: Using aftermarket products not tested by the manufacturer can void your warranty, cause damage, create safety hazards, or lead to injury. Use only manufacturer-recommended products.  Using untested products is at your own risk.
  • Chargers:  Always use a charger specifically designed for your battery model. Using the wrong charger (incorrect amperage or usage) can damage your e-bike's electrical system or create a safety hazard.
  • Damaged Battery/Charger: If your battery or charger is damaged, stop using it immediately and contact us. Continued use could lead to further damage or a fire hazard.

Understanding Your Battery:

E-bikes use lithium-ion batteries in three main designs:

  • External:  Attached to the bike frame.
  • Semi-Integrated:  Partially embedded in the frame.
  • Internal:  Completely hidden inside the frame.

While all use lithium-ion technology, the way they are secured, activated, and charged may vary.  Refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions.

Temperature Matters:

Batteries perform best within a specific temperature range (ideally 50-70°F or 10-20°C).  Extreme temperatures (too hot or too cold) can affect charging and performance, and high temperatures can even cause internal battery damage or fire.

Safe Charging Practices:

  • Location: Always charge your e-bike battery indoors, in a dry, safe area, away from children, direct sunlight, dirt, debris, tripping hazards, and flammable materials.
  • Heat Sources: Never charge your battery near heat-generating devices.
  • Accessibility: Choose a charging location that is easily accessible and doesn't block emergency exits.
  • Supervision: Always monitor your battery while it's charging.

Charging Procedures:

  • Regular Charging: Charge your battery when you first receive your e-bike and after each use.
  • Battery Maintenance: To keep your battery in peak condition, charge and use your e-bike at least every 90 days.  Do not store your e-bike for more than 24 hours with an empty battery.
  • Removable Batteries: If your battery is removable, take it off the bike before charging to prevent power surges that could damage other electrical components.

Step-by-Step Charging Instructions:

  1. Power Off: Turn off your e-bike (both the display and the battery, if possible).
  2. Remove Battery (If Applicable): If removable, place the battery on a flat, secure surface with the indicator lights facing up.
  3. Connect Charger to Battery: Open the rubber cover on the battery charging port and plug in the charger.
  4. Plug into Wall Outlet: Plug the charger into a wall outlet. The charger's LED light will be red while charging.  It will turn green when charging is complete.
  5. Disconnect Charger: Once charging is finished, unplug the charger from the wall outlet, then carefully unplug it from the battery. Charging can take up to 12 hours.
  6. Remount Battery (If Applicable): If you removed the battery, align it with the mount, slide it into the cradle, and secure it before locking it in place.
